Wordless Wednesday
I love raising laying hens. At one time I had over 40 hens and and a beautiful rooster. When we began to travel more often I decided to reduce my flock. We gave 30 hens to a local farmer and I had ten remaining. A few weeks after reducing my flock a possum got in the hen house. My rooster killed the possum and died defending his girls. A few days later a dog got in and killed all the remaining hens except a white hen I named Pearl.
Pearl is a survivor. She has lived 2 years now since the flock was killed. I still enjoy her antics and she enjoys total free roaming on our farm.
Chicks we hatched in an incubator. |
We keep them in the chicken run when we are not at home. |
A little time out in the yard. When we are home to keep them safe. |
Mr. Rooster! |
Two days of eggs from my hens. |
cracks me up that she is hanging with the kitty cats....

Very cute. At least the last hen isn't lonely. I'm glad she has the cats for company.
ReplyDeleteLook at the awesome basket of eggs! Great to see your cat and the hen's hanging out together! Thanks for stopping by WW. Have a great day!
ReplyDeleteI'm very jealous of all your fresh, yummy eggs! Also a bit surprised to see that those cats don't give your chickens any trouble ;)
ReplyDeleteI think it is so cool your cats not attack the hen! I don't know if our cat would be so nice. LOL! Thanks for stopping by my blog. Following you back (soon).

I'm definitely not a country farm girl so it was great hearing this story and seeing all the wonderful pictures. Thanks so much!
ReplyDeleteAh bless her, they have an amazing spirit don't they :) .... I've got 4 ex-battery rescue chickens (I lost 2 last year unfortunately) and was very surprised at quickly you become attached to them!
ReplyDeleteThat's a sad, but common, story. I've lost most of my hens this summer to a family of raccoons. Love the rooster you had -- gorgeous! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for stopping by, commenting and following along on my blog today. I truly appreciate it. :)
That is so sad :( I am so sorry!
ReplyDeleteI hope Pearl lives a very long happy life! (I'm sure she is/will :) )
Fun reading...
ReplyDeleteLove the chickens...didn't see where you live? You said a farm?
I'm sure it's heaven for your grandchildren - cute Pearl with the cats - love the photo!
Love that she is with the cats. How cute! Wish we could have hens here. Thanks for stopping by my WW. Following you back.
ReplyDeleteWow! Your rooster laid down his life for the hens? I never knew they did that! So sad that the dog eventually got the rest of the girls. :-(
ReplyDeleteThanks for the follow and visiting my blog today! Your newest follower here! :-) Hope your Wednesday is going well!
Awwe. So sweet. We have 5 hens and a rooster and one lone baby chick. We should have done the incubator because the other 12 eggs didn't hatch because they got squished etc. I feel so bad.
ReplyDeleteHop'pin by from 'Wobble Over Wednesday'. I'm following your blog now, wont you please come and follow me back?? ~KM

ReplyDeleteWow! Look at all those eggs. Pearl is a survivor, isn't she? My goodness. Something was getting into our neighbor's coop and they never did figure out what it was. Thanks for linking with us!
