Our New Pound Puppy

Disclosure: I am participating in the Verizon Boomer Voices program and have been provided with a wireless device and six months of service in exchange for my honest opinions about the product.

About two weeks ago when my granddaughters were visiting grandpa decided we should visit the local Dog Pound. This was totally a spur of the moment thought. I decided this might be a great learning experience for our granddaughters. On our way to the pound we talked about the reasons a dog might be in a pound. We talked about how the dogs are cared for in the pound and how it was different than a home for the dogs. The entire drive I kept thinking that it was just a trip to look at the dogs. We would certainly not be adopting one today.
When we arrived at the doors our conversation went like this.
Grandpa (my dear hubby): Casually "If we see a dog you like we can bring it home."
Grandma (me): "Cough, cough, cough what! Your kidding, right?"
Grandpa: "No, if you like one and the girls like it we can bring it home."
Grandma: Mumbling " I don't know about this! This is not really going to happen."

So we go inside. We had to wait our turn. There was a couple applying to foster dogs for the pound. Another couple was picking a dog to take home with them. We sat patiently in the lobby and talked to the receptionist. There was a cat just hanging around in the lobby that helped keep the girls occupied.
We then went into the back to visit the dogs in the kennel cages. I wish I had thought at the time to take a few photos but I was a little overwhelmed to say the least. In the third cage down sat a little Pomeranian dog. It was so small and cute. The dog's report hanging on the cage had the name labeled Nelly. The report also said she was found abandoned on the side of a road. Weight 5lbs., friendly with other cats and dogs. I wanted to hear more about her so we asked a few questions. We learned that Nelly was a boy. The pound did not know anything about him aside from the fact that he was probably 8 years old, friendly, house broken and loved lots of attention. They thought his owner may have went into a nursing home or passed away. The owners relatives must have abandoned him. I thought this little dog might just be perfect for us. I was worried that I did not know anything about a Pomeranian's temperament. Would he be OK with children? Would he make a good family dog? I quickly took out my Droid Razr Maxx HD and asked Google to search Pomeranian dogs. This is part of a clip of what I read.
Thanks to my Droid I was able to decide to take this needy little fella home that same day. If I did not have my phone I may have been even more hesitant to take this big step.
The pound assured us that if our new friend did not get along with King Arthur or had problems being around little children we could return him with out any problems.
Meet Scooby-Doo

Our Grandchildren chose his name after lots of thought. I think it fits him just fine and he answered to it right away. I have a feeling he would come to any name as long as he has lots of love and attention.
When we first got Scooby home he got a bath right away as his fur was tangled and matted with burs. He had only been at the pound a few days. They said they had been working on his coat slowly as it was in pretty bad shape. I could only imagine he must have been a sight. Scooby is terrified of brooms. I believe he may have been mistreated with a broom. He also gets very defensive when our feet get near him. I have to wonder what he has been through.
Scooby-Doo meets King Arthur
Scooby did not care a bit about King Arthur even though K.A. was so sweet and got down on Scooby's level and tried to play with him.
At this point we have decided to keep Scooby-Doo and give him the loving home he needs.
What do you think? Have you ever adopted a dog or puppy from the pound. Are you an animal lover? What animals do you like most?

    1. Scooby is our 4th adoption from the pound. I think all the dogs and cats there deserve a real home.

  2. Those are the BEST dogs to adopt I think.. First of all, they need a home and secondly, they seem to know when someone adopts them. There's a special appreciation from them. You all will love Scooby Doo.

    Hugs,
    Betsy

  3. Bonnie... I thought you were a sweetheart for a long time, now I know you have a heart of gold. Your Hubby too!
It breaks my heart when I go to a pound and see all the animals that have been thrown out by their owners.
Scooby is so lucky that you found him... he will love you forever.

I used to adopt from pounds, but now I don't have any animals because we travel so often.

    1. It is hard to pass by so many dogs in the pound and just pick one. We tried to pick the one that would fit our family best.
We also travel a lot. My soon is still home so he takes great care of our animals. I guess when he marries and moves out we will have to stop traveling so often.

  7. Aww what a cutie!

Our dog is a rescue as well and she also has a thing about feet we think she must have been kicked she has got better over the years but sometimes we still catch her flinching if we catch her by surprise. :( She also had a phobia of carrier bags (now they mean food so she dives right into them).

It's so sad that people can abandon animals and I don't even want to think about abusing them :(

  8. YAY!! All of our dogs are rescues and I have found that they have a ton of love to give! :) Congrats on your beautiful new "baby". I hope that he learns that no matter what happened in the past, in your house there is no need to fear brooms or feet.

  12. All of our pets are rescues. I love hearing stories of adoption! He is a cutie! As to cell phones, I don't know what I would do without mine. Verizon is awesome. I really do think they have the best network so you can always look up the information you need when you need it and wherever you are.

  14. Congrats on the newest addition to your family. I've never had a rescue dog but we did rescue our very first cat from the the ASPCA while we lived in NY. At the time we lived in Brooklyn in an apartment so didn't think it would have been great for a dog. Now we're in CO with a house and big open space we decided to get dogs but got them from the pet store. I admit we looked at the ones at the shelter but they were mostly big dogs and my kids wanted small dogs so we got a Shih-Tzu and a Maltese who don't care much for each other but absolutely adore our cat. So I guess you can say we are animal lovers. Hope you're having a happy Saturday.

  15. Great story! Great dog. We only have had rescued dogs. I'm a thrift shopper and a recycler, so it's part of the big picture. But like you and some other commenters, I think that future travel might mean no more new dogs once the kids launch. But we'll probably volunteer to dog sit for friends when they travel.

  16. Poms are amazing dogs. When I was growing up, my family had a little black Pomeranian named Cookie. He's no longer with us and to this day I haven't been able to bring myself to get another dog, but if I ever do - it will be another pom.

  17. Wonderful! It looks like he fits right in with your family and is happy. Our big old English Mastiff is like a big kid wanting to play 24/7.

  18. I don't see us ever getting a dog any other way. There are just so many dogs waiting for a home in shelters. Scooby Doo looks like he fits right in.
