Making a Dinosaur Cake

Last weekend my grandson turned 2 years old. I had planned to make him a Magic School Bus Cake. At the last minute he asked for a dinosaur cake. I love making cakes so I jumped right in changed gears and this is what I came up with.

Butter Cream Icing for Cake Decorating

ingredients:
1/2 cup solid vegetable shorting
1/2 cup butter softened
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
4 cups sifted confectioners' sugar
2 tablespoons milk
Makes approximately 3 cups icing.

Cream shorting and butter with an electric mixer. Add vanilla. Gradually add sugar one cup at a time, beating well on medium speed. Scrape sides and bottom of bowl often.  Continue reading...

Cake Decorating: Royal Icing

Today we are going to make Royal Icing. What is Royal Icing? Cake decorators use royal icing to make edible decorations to put on cakes. Royal icing is not for frosting a cake. This icing is stiff and drys hard. When making decorations to place on a cake they are usually made and left to sit on waxed paper until they are dry(24 hrs).
