DIY: Christmas Grape Vine Wreath

Many years ago my friend gave my husband and I a grape vine wreath for our first Christmas as a married couple. I had the wreath for many years. Some how with all our travels we lost the wreath. I decided to make my own wreath this year. Why not with all the grape vines on our property. I know we will be pruning them soon so why not use a few vines to make my wreath.
First I cut a bunch of vines. I then taped one end. I would have normally used floral wire instead of tape but I thought the tape would stand out in my photos better.
This was my first bunch. The vines are about 10 to 12 feet long. I added a few more vines after the picture. I then held the taped end in one hand. with my other hand I pulled the vine in an arch then worked it back to the taped end. I taped the vines where they met together.

Then I pulled the vines around one last time. I tucked the ends in to the openings weaving in and out as much as I could.

I then cute a couple ends off a blue spruce bough. I tied the ends of the spruce tips together with twine. Then I tied on a couple pine cones to the spruce tips.

I tied the spruce tips and pine cones to the wreath. I added a bow and its ready to hang.

What are your favorite Christmas decorations?

Smiley Cookies for Christmas

Over the Thanksgiving Holiday my family and I had the opportunity to try Christmas Cookies from Smiley Cookies. I am a cookieholic. If given a package of cookies I can eat and eat until they are all gone. So I would not eat my self in to sugar shock I shared the cookies with my family after Thanksgiving dinner.
First off the packaging is fantastic. The cookies arrive in a shipping box and in side the nice packed box is a smiley carton and in that is a plastic package of cookies. The Smiley carton is of keepsake quality. I will be using my carton to keep holiday cards in. If you were planning to give cookies as a gift their packaging is perfect for this. I am thinking about ordering a package to be sent to relatives out of state that have nut allergies. All I have to do is order their nut free Christmas cookies. Then I will have one gift marked off my long list.
So, let me tell you what my family thought about these very special cookies. Pooh Bear thought they were and I quote, "yummy." Grandpa had a couple gingerbread cookies with his coffee and thought they were just perfect. I like the sugar cookies they were soft, fresh and sweet just like a sugar cookie should be.

If you want to put a smile on your child or grandchild's face then I recommend Smiley cookies for their Christmas stocking. Smiley Cookies want to help you save a little this holiday season. You can use the coupon code "BLOG10" at checkout to get 10% of any of our Christmas cookie gifts!

# Giveaway Lovable Labels Make Great Stocking Stuffers

Everyone knows how much I love my grandchildren. Most review products revolve around my precious grandchildren. Lovable Labels are no exception to that rule. I like to have my grandchildren visit our home as often as possible. One problem I have is remembering what color sippy cup belongs to which grandchild. That is where I like to use our lovable labels. I stick one on each child's cup and no more problems sharing germs or having arguments.
The first page of labels shown here are the Regular sticker labels. These are good for books, lunch boxes, toys, water bottles and even baby bottles. They are microwave, dishwasher safe, UV resistant and waterproof.
I received a Lovable Labels Holly Jolly Gift Pack for review. So many labels are included in this pack I do believe Pooh Bear will be set for a long while. I am thinking he has enough labels to get through preschool.
I placed a slimline label on Pooh Bears sippy. The label is dishwasher safe, microwave safe and great for small items like pencils and toothbrushes.

I like the press and stick clothing dots best! Just stick them on no sewing or ironing needed. They are washer safe, dryer safe and even bleach safe. Now lost mittens, hats and even jackets are easily returned.

They even make shoe labels. The grip backing and protective cover makes them water proof and stay where they are put. I like that they come in two colors red and blue. Pooh Bears mom put the red in his right shoe and blue in his left shoe. Now he knows red is for his right foot. This is a great way to teach left from right for young children.
If you would like to purchase Lovable Labels you can use the coupon code: DECBLOG34 This offers $5 off any purchase of $25 or more and is valid until December 31, 2012.

How would you like to will  a package of Lovable Labels for you child or grandchild? Just enter the rafflecopter below and have fun.

May We Be Thankful

Help Me Thanksgiving Day Prayer

O God, when I have food,
help me to remember the hungry;
When I have work,
help me to remember the jobless;
When I have a home,
help me to remember those who have no home at all;
When I am without pain,
help me to remember those who suffer,
And remembering,
help me to destroy my complacency;
bestir my compassion,
and be concerned enough to help;
By word and deed,
those who cry out for what we take for granted.
Amen.
-Samuel F. Pugh

Enjoy your day. Have a great weekend my friends.

Count Down to Christmas Plus Giveaway!

What makes Christmas special for you and your family?
Little family moments make our holiday special. It is the little things like making cookies, decorating the tree, wrapping gifts, a family get together, wish lists from little children and holiday cards. All these little moments wrapped up in a bow make Christmas memories dear to me.
Our family has created many traditions through out the years. We have had to make some changes in recent years with my children moving away, getting married and starting their own families. Last year we opened gifts while on line with Skype. This year I have had to put up my tree for the first time in my entire life before Thanksgiving. I was just a little reluctant. Had I needed to do this a few years ago I would have refused. Now the new and improved grandma has learned to deal with a changing world and as long as we get to make special Christmas memories with our grandchildren it does not matter when, where and how they are made. This week I have had several opportunities to make memories with and for my grandchildren. Little Bug and I made cookies and decorated the tree. My grandchildren that live in different states received very special Christmas cards to help start creating our holiday memories. Thanks to Hallmark cards it was so easy to create those special moments that can be remembered for a life time.
The cards I sent to my grandchildren are very special cards. The first is an interactive Countdown card. You can set it to count down the days until Christmas day or to count down the day until grandma arrives. Another card is a recordable greeting card. The idea is to have your child or grandchild record a wish list to be sent to Santa. These cards are very special keepsake cards.
Not being able to be a part of my grand children's holiday memories would be very hard for me. Thanks to Hallmark I can be a part of the early holiday preparations even when we are far apart.

Pumpkin
Sweet Pea

With the simple directions I set the count down. If you are from my generation setting the countdown was like setting a digital watch. I mailed the card to my youngest granddaughter Sweet Pea.

My oldest granddaughter recorded her wish list on her very special card. We have planned a Skype session for later this week so I can hear her recorded wish list.
I talked to their parents and the grandchildren were thrilled to receive mail and open their cards. They check the count down daily to remember the big day is on the way.

Little Bug
Little Bug enjoyed his card. He pretended to read it for a long while. The card was decorated in glitter. He got a little glitter on his hands and thought that it was snow from Santa.

My daughter even captured videos of my oldest grandson Pooh Bear and my youngest grandson Little Roo with their Hallmark card. ( Roo is my newest grandchild's nick name. That would be Roo from Winnie The Pooh.)

I will translate Little Roo's video for you. "Hi grandpa and grandma. Thank you for the yummy card. Mommy said I have to play with my ball instead of eating the card. Merry Christmas everyone."
Along with the Signature Collection greeting cards Hallmark also sent me a boxed set of beautiful greeting cards that is just perfect for sending cards to my entire family and friends.

How would you like to have as much fun as I had with these awesome cards?  You grandchildren or children will love every moment of making memories. Just enter the rafflecopter below. You can purchase Hallmark cards on line or at a Hallmark store near you.

Chocolate NuStevia

NuNaturals has a new product that I have been trying this week. It's Alcohol Free Chocolate NuStevia. With Christmas fast approaching. I wanted to make some sugar free treats for my grandchildren that would make them feel like they are getting sweets just like their little friends. I decided to make some meringue cookies.
This recipe is very simple and easy to make. The meringues come out light and fluffy.
Ingredients
2 egg whites
1/8 tsp of salt
1/8 tsp of cream of tartar
1/2 cup white sugar 1/4 cup PreSweet Tagatose(also from NuNaturals)
8 drops Alcohol Free Chocolate NuStevia
Directions
Preheat oven to 225 degrees F. Line 2 baking sheets with foil. Beat egg whites, salt and cream of tartar in a large glass or metal mixing bowl until soft peaks form. This does take a little time. Gradually add the PreSweet Tagatose and Chocolate NuStevia. Be very careful to add the sweeteners slowly. Beat until stiff peaks form. Drop by spoonful on to baking sheets. Bake 1 1/2 hours until dry. Turn off oven and let sit until cool. Do not remove from oven until completely cool.
The above recipe can be changed up for the holiday season. My first batch went so quickly I did not get a picture. I made a second batch with Peppermint NuStevia Liquid instead of the Chocolate NuStevia. I also added one drop each of green and red food coloring to the meringue.

You can also substitute any one or more of these NuStevia flavors for the Chocolate NuStevia.
Lemon, orange or vanilla NuStevia liquids. Turns out my favorite flavor is Peppermint NuStevia Liquid.

CD: I Like to Sing!

By: Sukey Molloy

By now everyone who reads my blog regularly knows how much I like music by Sukey Molloy. The CD "I Like to Sing" is no exception. I have found it to be just as entertaining and soothing to my grandchildren as all Sukey's other music.
I am a believer in exposing children to music early in life. It can be used as an important learning tool in the everyday life of a child. Music can also be used to sooth an irritated, ill, unhappy or frightened child. As I have mentioned in the past I like to play music to my grandchildren when we are driving long distances.  My grandchildren can get very cranky on long road trips. Who can blame them? When they are strapped down and can not move easily they get very uncomfortable. We do stop often for short breaks and at least take a hour long break every 3 or 4 hours. But all breaks considered they need soothing music to keep them relaxed and happy for most of our trips. I like to use upbeat music when everyone is awake or needs motivation. Then I use soft and calming music (example: lullabies) for nap time or cranky times.
Why do I like Sukey's music so much? Well, not all children's music is made the same. I need to understand the lyrics that are being played with the music. How many times have you listened to music on the radio and thought you knew the words. Maybe you were singing along with a song and had to find out later that you misunderstood the lyrics! Have you ever listened to a song that you understood only a word or two of the lyrics. Maybe the entire song sounded like mumbo jumbo! I want my children and grandchildren to speak clearly and be understood. If they are listening to music that is not clear how can I expect them to speak clearly.
Sukey Molly's music is great in this respect. The lyrics are clear, easily understood and just out right fun for my grandchildren.
On to the CD. "I Like to Sing!"  Has a collection of 18 lively tracks. This CD actually had my grandchildren bobbing their heads, clapping their hands and singing along to these very interactive songs. My favorite is track 8 "What Kind of Animal." I just love hearing my grandchildren singing along wanting to be monkeys.
From familiar songs like "The Itsy Bitsy Spider, Twinkle Twinkle to interactive songs like Jump Down Turn Around your child/grandchild will be sure to find a favorite song to sing along with.
This CD would definitely make a great stocking stuffer for your young child.

DIY: Cinnamon Pine Cones

I have been decorating for Thanksgiving and Christmas this week. One of my favorite but simple decorations I like to use are cinnamon scented pine cones. I set them in baskets around my home, hang them on wreaths and hang them on my tree. Have you ever wondered what companies use to scent the pine cones with to make them so strongly scented? I thought about it this year, I am betting that the scents they use are man made and full of chemicals. I decided to try and make my own scented pine cones.

My grandson and I  went out and gathered a nice number of pine cones. I hosed them off . I wanted to encourage any little critters to leave and find new homes.

Old cooking pot with pine cones.

Next, I set a full pot of water on to boil. I threw in a 1/4 cup of ground cinnamon, a hand full of cinnamon sticks, and a 1/2 dozen whole cloves. You could also add a couple whole star anise. I brought the water to a boil and then let simmer for 15 minutes. I wanted the water to be very scented.

I then allowed the water to cool a bit and poured the scented water over the pine cones. Be very careful if your water is still hot.
I left the pot sit on my deck for about three weeks. I stired the water every couple days or so. Twice over the three weeks I drained off the old water and  added another batch of hot scented water to the pot. The longer they sit in the scented water the stronger smell of cinnamon they will absorbe.
When I felt they were ready. I poured off the water and laid them out to dry. It took over a week to dry them completely. It had rained once during the week and I forgot to cover them,

When making my basket I tucked in a couple cinnamon sticks in among the pine cones for extra scent. I will add a coupel drops of clove oil to the basket as the scent fades. What holiday decorations have you been working on?

Sukey's Circle DVD Review

By now everyone knows how much I like Sukey Molloy's music. My grandchildren and I have been fans ever since I reviewed I Am Happy by Sukey Molloy. Any time I play a music CD from Sukey my grand children's eyes light up and they sing along to their favorite songs. I like to play her music on long car rides with the grandchildren. This keeps them happy and relaxed. We all know how hard long car rides can be on little children.
Today I have been given the privilege to review a DVD " Sukey's Circle" volume 1. The episodes on the DVD are These Are My Eyes, Tick Tock, I Like To Move My Body and Tick Tock Gets Dressed. The DVD runs 28 minutes long. I played the DVD for Little Bug and he joined in and tried to sing and move right along with Sukey, Tick Tock and Sunny.
I was able to get a little video clip on the down low because Little Bug does not like to be recorded. The clip might be a little dark but I think it is clear enough that you will see how much he enjoys interacting with Sukey's Circle.
Little Bug asked to watch the DVD repeatedly the first time we played it. I finally had to distract him by offering to let him feed the animals with me. After the third time through I felt it was too much TV time for his age. It sure does show how much he enjoyed the DVD. I know he will ask me to play it often. I can hardly wait to share the DVD with my other grandchildren. We will be traveling to see each of them very soon. I will be sure to come back and up date this post with all their reactions after our trip.

Lets talk a little about the DVD. The first selection on the DVD is These Are My Eyes. Sukey asks the children to point to their eyes, nose mouth and ears. She goes on to identify other body parts with the children. Watching Little Bug singing These Are My Eyes with Sukey makes me want to join in all the fun.
My favorite episode on the DVD is "I like to Move My Body". Teaching children to follow directions, move body parts and enjoy exercising all at the same time. I will be using the DVD as a learning tool for my youngest grandchildren. I really like when learning is so much fun that children do not even realize they are learning.

Any one of Sukey Molloy's music CD's or DVD's would make great stocking stuffers for Christmas. Stop over at http://www.sukeymolloy.com/shop/ and find a perfect gift for that special child in your life.

Stay tuned for my next review: "I Like to Sing" by Sukey Molloy

I received the above mentioned DVD to review in exchange for an honest opinion.

Great Christmas Gifts at UncommonGoods

I just love shopping for Christmas. I like finding a unique gift for that special person and seeing their eyes light up when they open the package. My goal is to hear squeals of delight and happiness through out the house. That is why I like shopping at Uncommon Goods. I have been able to find a unique gift for most of my family and friends.
For the budding artist in the family this Stencil and Pen Kit is perfect. It should be great for a child that has just a little patience when lining the stencils up step by step. The kit comes in a tin and has three markers and three templates. The large template has hair and hat shapes. The small red template has four face shapes to draw. The green template has eyes, noses, mouths, mustaches and beards. Any child who likes to doodle will enjoy this set.
Check out lots of girl gift ideas here.

Do you know a younger child who wants to build models like their father or brother? It is frustrating for a young child to want to build a complicated model like they see a loved one doing but they just don't have the patience or skills. The answer might be Tube Toys!

This is an Eco friendly toy! The tube holds parts that are put onto the tube to create a toy vehicle.
That was fun to put together. I bet any young boy will get a kick out of building their own truck!
You can find other toys for boys here.
The last gift I really liked was a Portable Ping-Pong set. This is great for young and old alike. I think this is the perfect energy burning game that the whole family can play. The set comes in a nice carry-all-bag with a drawstring. The ping-pong balls are stored inside the expanding net.
The handle on the paddles retract inside making for easy storage.
At one time grandpa was the ping-pong champion in college. We will sure have fun playing ping-pong with the grandchildren over the Christmas holiday.
